“Courageous Scholar” Award

Are you a HIV positive patient and still actively engaged in studying in School and looking to build a career? Or are you caring for a HIV positive patient in your family while being enrolled in a School? We know how challenging it can be to manage the dual responsibility of being both a student and a caregiver. However, we also know that this experience can be rewarding and provide a unique sense of fulfillment of having done something worthwhile for yourself or your dear ones.

STDtestMD offers scholarships on a regular basis to college students that are HIV-positive or are taking caring of a family member who is HIV positive. The award amount ranges from $200 - $500 and requires applicants to share their experience with others on how they are coping with their HIV positive status, and what suggestions and advice they can offer to those that do not have the disease. All information shared will be kept confidential and presented anonymously within the program.

Submission Guidelines

You can submit your story through an 800 – 1000 word essay or a 3 min video telling us about your journey.

  • Mention whether it’s you who is HIV positive or a family member that has HIV positive status and how long have you or the family member been living with this active status?
  • What kind of support are you getting from family members if you yourself are HIV positive or how are you providing support to a family member who’s HIV positive?
  • How has the HIV positive status or the caregiver role to another family member influenced your career path?
  • What kind of support do you expect government and health care organizations to provide to raise awareness about preventing and spreading of HIV in our population?
  • What is your advice to those that do not have the HIV positive status?

You can share your “Courageous Scholar” story by June 30th, 2017 and be a lucky winner of the scholarship award.


Three students attending a College or University will each receive $200 thru $500 grant based on our Scholarship Team’s assessment of the quality of the essays.

Assessment Criteria

Our Scholarship team will assess the submissions based on the following criteria:

  • Quality of Submission – does the essay or video tell the story of the student in a compelling manner that can inspire others to emulate in their own life’s journey.
  • Has the applicant addressed all the questions comprehensively as required in the guidelines for the essay or the video?
  • Were all the other terms and conditions mentioned in the application guidelines satisfied by the applicant?


  • Applicants should be enrolled as full-time students at a college or university in U.S. as a freshman, sophomore or senior or a returning freshman.
  • They should be HIV positive or taking care of a HIV positive immediate family member.
  • Applicant should fulfill application instructions and agree to the Scholarship Terms and Conditions. "Courageous Scholar" Scholarship Award Terms and Conditions

  • Applicants must provide proof that they are enrolled full-time students at a college or university in U.S. through official transcripts from their previous academic year.
  • Applicant is a permanent resident or citizen of the United States.
  • Applicants must consent to undergo HIV testing at for proof of HIV positive status or for their HIV positive family member. This will be free of charge. Alternatively, applicants can provide verification from their doctor/physician that they or their family member have HIV condition as proof of their HIV active status.
  • may choose to use or publish the essays submitted by the applicants in part or whole on their website, blogs, social media or other public or private broadcast media on the condition that the participant's identity will be kept confidential and all communication of their submissions will be anonymous.
  • All scholarship awards are a one-time grant and presentation of the essay doesn’t necessarily mean that the award will be automatic, as each entry should meet the other conditions mentioned above.
  • may choose to not award or to withdraw the scholarship for any reason.
  • Terms and conditions for this award will be governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey
