Hepatitis C Test Panel

Hepatitis C refers to the inflammation of the liver caused by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis C is usually a chronic illness and can lead to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer if not treated in a timely manner.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is tested in our highly rated CLIA certified labs through the HCV antibody test that identifies the presence of the virus in the blood. This blood test provides early detection of acute or chronic Hepatitis C infections and is a reliable as well as FDA approved way of determining the presence of HCV in an infected person. An optimal level of blood sample is sufficient to complete the test in a short amount of time and no fasting is necessary for the test. Results are usually available within 24 to 48 hours of completion of the test.

When can one get tested after exposure?

The HCV antibody test detects infection after about eight weeks of exposure. One should test after this 8 week period has elapsed to enable detection of antibodies that the person’s system would have developed to fight against the virus. If one tests earlier, they may receive a negative result even in the presence of an infection. If one's test results are negative after suspected exposure, they should get re-tested after three months have elapsed to confirm or reject the result of the earlier test that may have been taken too soon.

Hepatitis C

How is Hepatitis C tested, is it a blood or urine test?

Hepatitis C is tested on a blood sample. Laboratory personnel draw a small blood sample during your visit to the test center which is then used for performing the test.

What do I need to do to prepare for the test?

Hepatitis C tests doesn’t require any special preparation. No fasting is necessary for the blood draw.

What do the results mean?

A positive HCV antibody test result implies that one has an active Hepatitis C infection. A negative test indicates the virus' absence in the blood. Negative results mean that either one has no active infection or that the virus is present in minimal numbers. If one takes the test too early, the virus may not be detectable in the blood and the results can come out to be negative. For this reason, they should get re-tested after three months have elapsed to confirm or reject the result of the earlier test that may have been taken too soon.

Who should get tested for Hepatitis C?

Hepatitis C is usually transmitted through direct contact with infected blood. At high risk are recipients of the blood transfusions that were performed before 1992 when better screening of donors' blood was not readily available. Besides the above exposure through blood contact, unprotected sex, sharing of needles, syringes and other injecting equipment can result in infection. If one suspects exposure to the virus through any of these ways, testing is crucial to detect the STI status. Blood screening for STDs is also important for individuals who have had unprotected sex with partners whose STDs status is unknown.

Excellent service hands down. My test was quick and results were available sooner than I expected. The best part was the privacy of the test. No one asked me personal questions, and the whole process was quite discreet.
